max - he's gone.

  • Mood: Lonely
  • Listening to: incubus - light grenades
just spent over an hour waiting for my parents to get back from the vet (they took him in a low-floor taxi)
his heart rate was very erratic, on top of everything else and the fact that there's no way my parents could afford the bills that would follow x-rays and treatment, they put him to sleep.

he would have been 12 on 16th April

***********

he's got bad in the last week or so... I don't live here anymore so I don't get to see how he's deteriorated. probably for the best, I don't know.

he keeps coughing up, really noisily like he's going to vomit but nothing comes up. it's unsettling, not just for us but he obviously gets distressed by this. his breathing has got really laboured in the last week, I just sat with him 5 minutes ago and he's breathing so fast, and heavily with a slight wheezing sound, almost constantly it seems.

he's already been diagnosed with some kind of chest/lung ailment. his back legs get so bad now that he can no longer be walked, he has to stay at home. He used to be so happy to see you he'd greet you excitedly even if you'd only been out to the shop for 5 minutes... now he won't even get up out of his bed at all. some days he doesn't even bother to lift his head.

no-one's sure what to do with him. The vet is a good 40 mins walk from here which he can't manage, he won't get into the car because he can't lift himself off the ground with his legs, and no-one can pick him up as he's too heavy (my dad has a bad back too)... They're thinking of calling a vet out, it's so expensive and god knows what they'll do with him when they get here anyway. I think the best thing will be to have him put to sleep, rather than dragging out whatever it is, he's just not happy anymore.

so I'm bracing myself really, it's just a matter of time.

I'm so sorry to hear that. :( I had a pet like this a while back, but he was a horse. He used to be worked really hard, do 5 rodeos a day (I'm serious, no joke) and then was given some kind of horse-pain killer so he wouldn't feel anything. His legs were so messed up that he would have to hop (like first his front legs would hop forward, then his back ones) and that's how he lived. We took him in when he was 24 (REALLY old for a horse) and he got a little better. But in 2 years he got so bad that my mom put him down when I was at school. DX Even though I knew it was for the best, it was still painful.
I am sorry to hear aout max

I'm so sorry Mandy! I know how it is to lose a beautiful dog such as he, my golden had to be put to sleep and I know how much it hurts. I suck at words of advice or comfort at this point in time and I'm really sorry that you have to go through this. I'm sorry that I can't offer any more comfort than this, but I know how you feel and I really hope [if he does get put to sleep] its painless. My heart goes out to you

oh thats so sad.. my dog, fawn, died in the same way. she was a german shepherd mix and she already had a bad back.she couldnt get up anymore so my dad had to carry her to the vet. but my mom reassured me that it was painless, and we had to put her out of her misery. i grew up with that dog! youre not alone!:cuddle:
Poor puppy. :(

:cling: Aww, you poor, poor thing! :(

It's so hard when this happens to our pets  I remember when my hamster died - she was the first real pet I'd ever had and I'd been so attached to her. It broke my heart when she got ill because in my heart of hearts, I knew she was an old hamster (over 2 y/o) and there nothing else we could do. I still feel sad thinking about it, but I just try and think about all the good times - which certainly outweigh the negative! :)

Good luck, hon! If the worst comes to the worst, at least you'll be doing the kindest thing possible for him, and he'll literally just drift off to sleep and be completely free of pain.

I'll be thinking of you and Max! I'm sorry I can't do anything to ease your pain, but I hope you get through everything ok!

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!
:cuddle: I'm with you on this one. Seeing as my grandparents are complete dog-aholics, I've grown up with at least a dozen different dogs (meh, they're all dead now), and it's pretty horrible when they start getting those old symptoms and all you can do is make them comfortable before getting shipped off to get acquainted with the *Needle of doom* :(
Wishing you the best of luck to pull through this!
